◉ NEW Functionality added to IAR Embedded Workbench for Ti MSP430

IAR Systems adds new functionality to development tool suite for Texas Instruments MSP430

Uppsala, Sweden—November 30, 2011—IAR Systems® today announced the availability of new functionality in IAR Embedded Workbench® for Texas Instruments’ microprocessor family MSP430. The new version adds several new features, among which are Position-independent code and read-only data (ROPI), and Multithread support.

Most applications are designed to be placed at a fixed position in memory. However, it is sometimes useful to instead decide at runtime where to place the application. When using the added functionality of Position-independent code and read-only data (ROPI) the compiler will generate code that uses PC-relative references for addressing code and read-only data.

◉ NEW IAR eases Software Development for Renesas SH

IAR eases software development for Renesas SH-based embedded systems

IAR Systems announced the availability of version 2.20 of IAR Embedded Workbench for SH. The new product version is an important addition to IAR Systems broad portfolio of C and C++ tools for building and debugging embedded system software for Renesas MCUs. The new version of IAR Embedded Workbench for SH includes new optimizations and new powerful debugger functionality as well as integration with Subversion, one of the most popular version control systems on the market. The compiler has been improved to optimize for higher execution speed, compared to the previous version. These improvements include options for more aggressive loop unrolling and function inlining. Developers of C++ applications can now also benefit from Virtual Function Elimination, where unused virtual functions are removed during the build process, resulting in tighter object code.

The IAR C-SPY Debugger is an important part of the integrated development environment for SH. The simulator version of the debugger includes a new Timeline window allowing graphically correlated visualization of the call stack and the interrupt log, both plotted against time. This view provides a clear view of the system’s basic behavior. Also the E10A-USB emulator version of the IAR C-SPY Debugger provides new functionality. Support for software breakpoints is now included a nd it is also possible to set breakpoints during program execution.

The profiling tool can now present statistics based on trace data of the application’s performance. An increasingly high number of 32-bit designs are RTOS-based and IAR Embedded Workbench for SH now comes with thread-safe libraries, allowing safe execution of multiple threads at the same time. IAR Embedded Workbench provides full support for SH-2A/ SH-2A FPU devices, a popular choice both in the automotive industry and in industrial automation. Version 2.20 contains support for the latest SH devices from Renesas.

IAR Embedded Workbench for 8051 complies with C99 Standard

IAR Systems has announced that its development toolsuite IAR Embedded Workbench for 8051 now complies with the ISO/IEC 9899:1999 standard, also known as C99. The IAR C/C++ compiler is believed to be the world’s first compiler for the 8051 architecture to fully support C99. It is the current C standard, developed as an improvement of the previous C90 standard and introducing several new language features.

Being the current C programming standard, C99 is a warrant for future portability since more and more microcontroller architectures become supported by C99 compliant compilers. Most of IAR Systems’ compilers are compliant to the C99 standard, a fact that can make porting code between microcontroller architectures more efficient and safe.

IAR Embedded Workbench for 8051 is a set of reliable and powerful C and C++ tools for building and debugging embedded system software for embedded systems. It provides a user friendly integrated development environment including a project manager, editor, build tools and debugger. In a continuous workflow, source files and projects can be created, built and debugged on hardware or in a simulator.

IAR Systems delivers new Advancements in Power Debugging Technology

IAR Systems® announced at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, USA, the new advancements in its innovative award-winning Power Debugging technology. Enhancements include the possibility to define power thresholds for filtering power data and to set power breakpoints, functionality that greatly simplify the process to accurately locate source code triggering unexpected levels of power consumption. Higher sampling rates of up to 10kHz also allows higher resolution in the correlation between power samples and source code.

Power Debugging
Because the integrated power debug technology offered in IAR Embedded Workbench® requires no extra tools, software engineers are able to test and reduce the system’s power consumption during the normal software development. Power breakpoints and data filtering make the technology even easier to use since it automates some of the tasks and helps developers find the corresponding source code to power hot spots easier.

“Software engineers need an easy way to take control of the system’s power consumption. Our Power Debugging technology takes power consumption analysis out of the lab and brings it to every programmer’s desk. This way power tuning becomes integrated in the workflow” said Mats Ullström, Product Director, IAR Systems. “Not only does this speed up the development process for our customers when there are fewer iterations between software development and testing, it also allows the end product to be better optimized in terms of power consumption.”

IAR Systems’ Power Debugging technology has been awarded with Best Electronic Design 2010 by Electronic Design magazine, and is a finalist for the 2010 EDN Innovation Awards.

IAR Embedded Workbench is an integrated development environment incorporating the optimizing IAR C/C++ compiler and the versatile IAR C-SPY Debugger. Power Debugging is supported for ARM Cortex and Renesas RX targets. The new power breakpoint and filtering features are currently available in IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM version 6.21.

SEGGER announces new RTOS embOS port for Renesas RL78

SEGGER announces new RTOS embOS port for Renesas RL78

SEGGER Microcontroller recently announced that embOS, the powerful, easy to use RTOS, is available for the RL78 from Renesas.
embOS View RL78
The real-time kernel embOS supports a premium feature set, such as the embOSView task-level profiling tool, an unlimited number of tasks and no need for compile-time configuration.

The plug-in for IAR’s Embedded Workbench provides task-sensitive information. This allows the developer to monitor all relevant data from suspended tasks and running tasks during debug sessions.

SEGGER has a very long history with Renesas and especially with the predecessor of the RL78 the NEC 78k0. Several years ago Segger started the embOS development on an  NEC 78k0 processor that has now evolved into the RL78 cost-effective micro-controller with very low power consumption. Therefore it has been a logical step for us to offer a new embOS for this microcontroller. The small footprint and high performance of embOS complement the low-power-modes of the RL78 making both products a perfect match.

embOS is a high-performance real-time OS that has been optimized for minimum memory consumption in both RAM and ROM, as well as high speed and versatility. It supports fully nested interrupts for zero interrupt latency. embOS is a priority-controlled multi-tasking system, designed as an embedded operating system for real-time applications for all popular CPUs. It provides a migration path with identical APIs across all platforms.

embOS is available as full source code and comes with a simple licensing model without royalties. Full product specifications and a trial version are available.
