🟠 What is DevAlert ?

Bring Diagnostic Insight from Remote Devices back to Development

Percepio DevAlert provides a diagnostic feedback loop between embedded devices and development teams. It captures and reports software anomalies during system testing, field trials and operation, giving developers access to detailed diagnostic information from the environment where a problem actually occurred.

Instead of relying only on problem descriptions, conventional logs or returned hardware, development teams can investigate issues using information captured directly from the affected device.

When the Problem is No Longer on Your Desk

During development, engineers usually have direct access to the target system.

Once a product enters system testing, field trials or customer operation, this changes.

A problem may occur hundreds or thousands of kilometers away. It may happen only once, under conditions that are difficult to reproduce. And by the time the development team hears about it, much of the information needed to understand the problem may already be gone.

DevAlert addresses this gap.

When relevant errors or anomalies occur, diagnostic information can be captured and made available to development and support teams for subsequent investigation.

This extends embedded software observability beyond the development laboratory.

Capture the Information That Matters

DevAlert can provide automatic alerts when errors, crashes or other defined anomalies occur.

Depending on the application and event, diagnostic information can include core dumps, system traces, logs, sensor readings and other device-specific data.

Core dumps from remote devices can be opened in familiar source-level debugging tools, allowing developers to inspect information such as call stacks, variables and processor registers.

System traces can be analysed with Percepio Tracealyzer, providing insight into the software events and RTOS activity leading up to an anomaly.

Instead of continuously transferring large amounts of diagnostic data, DevAlert can therefore provide detailed information associated with the events that actually require attention.

Online or Offline Devices

DevAlert is not limited to permanently cloud-connected products.

For online devices, alerts can be transferred automatically and become available through the DevAlert environment shortly after they occur.

For offline devices, diagnostic data can be transferred through a connected host system or stored on the device for later retrieval. Percepio's introductory setup, for example, can monitor locally connected devices using a serial connection without requiring cloud connectivity in the embedded target itself.

This makes DevAlert useful not only for deployed connected products, but also during system testing, field testing and other environments where direct access to the target system may be limited.

Debug Remote Problems with Familiar Tools

Collecting diagnostic information is only useful if developers can work with it effectively.

DevAlert therefore integrates remote diagnostic data with familiar desktop development tools.

Core dumps can be opened in an appropriate source-code debugger, while system traces can be analysed in Tracealyzer. Other types of diagnostic information can be associated with suitable desktop applications.

Percepio's Dispatcher software connects the DevAlert environment with these local tools, allowing diagnostic data to be opened using the applications engineers already know.

This provides remote observability without requiring developers to replace their established debugging and analysis environment.

From Testing to Deployed Products

DevAlert can already provide value during system and integration testing.

When multiple devices are operating in a test laboratory or during field trials, development teams can receive diagnostic information without having to attach a complete debugging setup to every individual target.

The same principle becomes even more valuable after deployment.

When a software problem occurs in a customer device, DevAlert can provide development teams with information from the actual system in which the problem occurred.

This can help address one of the most frustrating challenges in embedded debugging:
Trying to reproduce a problem that has already happened somewhere else.

Closing the Continuous Observability Feedback Loop

DevAlert plays a particularly important role in Percepio's broader Continuous Observability approach.

Tracealyzer provides deep visual insight into runtime behavior during development, integration and testing.

Detect continuously monitors embedded software for stability risks and captures diagnostic evidence when relevant problems occur.

DevAlert extends this visibility to remote and deployed systems and brings diagnostic information back to the development organization.

Together, these technologies create an overarching feedback loop:
Observe → Detect → Understand → Improve → Repeat

Information from testing and operation therefore does not remain isolated in the field.

It becomes an input to continued development and software improvement.

This is how DevAlert closes the loop between development and deployment.

Data Control and Privacy

Diagnostic information from embedded products can contain sensitive intellectual property and other data that organizations may not want to place in a third-party cloud environment.

DevAlert therefore separates its hosted service from the customer's diagnostic data storage.

Sensitive device data such as firmware images, core dumps, logs and traces can remain in private storage controlled by the customer, while still being accessible through the DevAlert workflow and local desktop integration.

This approach combines remote observability with control over where sensitive diagnostic information is stored and processed.

DevAlert – FEEDBACK

Within Continuous Observability, the role of DevAlert can be summarized in one word:

FEEDBACK

DevAlert brings diagnostic information from remote testing and deployed devices back to development, allowing real-world observations to become actionable engineering information.

Tracealyzer - UNDERSTAND

Gain deep visual insight into runtime behavior and investigate root causes.

Detect - RECOGNIZE & CAPTURE

Recognize stability risks and capture diagnostic evidence when relevant problems occur.

DevAlert - FEEDBACK

Bring diagnostic insight from remote and deployed systems back to development.
Together, they form Percepio's approach to Continuous Observability.
